More Than an Athlete: My Journey Through Collegiate Baseball and Finding True Purpose

Before I ever stepped foot on a college campus, my identity was completely wrapped up in one thing: being an athlete.

Like so many high school seniors chasing a dream, I felt the pressure mounting. I had spent my entire childhood on the field, and suddenly, it felt like all of it was riding on finding a college program—any program—that believed in me. But rejection after rejection left me wondering if I was good enough. When I received my first offer from a small DIII school, I cried—not out of celebration, but from sheer relief. I told my parents something I’d never admitted out loud: I didn’t think anyone wanted me.

That summer changed everything. After a strong season and relentless outreach, I landed at Norfolk State University, a small DI program. I thought I had made it.

But “making it” doesn’t always mean it feels right.

At NSU, I struggled—limited playing time, tough locker room dynamics, and a quiet fear that I was losing the love for the game. Still, I showed up early, stayed late, and pushed myself to outwork everyone. Eventually, my coaches noticed. Their recognition came with tough honesty: You might find a better opportunity elsewhere.

So I entered the transfer portal, feeling like I had failed.

But God had something bigger in store.

I transferred to Richard Bland College, a JUCO in Virginia. That’s where it all changed. The coaches believed in me. My teammates became family. And for the first time, I saw myself as more than an athlete. Through their example and the Gospel, I realized my worth isn’t based on a stat line. It’s based on something much deeper.

Later, I transferred again—this time to Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. There, I stepped into my purpose: leading my teammates, mentoring younger players, and giving back to the community that had poured so much into me.

Through all the transfers, setbacks, and triumphs, I’ve come to believe this:

🏅 Your value isn’t defined by your jersey.
💪 Hard work opens doors, but your character keeps them open.
🙏 You are more than your sport.
